245 Killer Keywords For LinkedIn Posts (And 130 Crappy Ones)

We had a hunch that word choice in LinkedIn posts have a strong effect on response rates. So we analysed over 2.6 million engagements across 16,000 LinkedIn posts to see which work, and which don’t.

Why? Because there’s so much “free advice” out there about what you’re supposed to do, or not do, and it’s extremely confusing. One guru says this, one expert says that, but none of them ever back up what they say with data.

Well, until now.

SPOILER ALERT: About 99% of what LinkedIn “gurus” tell you is wrong.

TL;DR

Some things work for obvious reasons, and some things are actually hurting you. For example:

FindingImpact on engagement
Long posts > short posts1000+ chars = +15%, short posts = -25%
Promo posts underperform-13% vs original content (no one cares about your latest webinar!)
If only you could get a new job every week”Starting new position” = +651% engagement
Be thankful, but not cheesy”Thank you” phrases = +67% average lift, but is highly variable
”Learn more” is poison-33% engagement (no one loves learning! Except nerrrrrds!)
Tricks don’t work in the long run”Link in comments” = -12%
Stop thinking🤔 = -11% (hmmm…)
Don’t be afraid to get excited!!!! = +25%
Do questions work? (NO)? = -9% on average
Image vs no imageNo impact!

That’s just a taste of what’s to come…

A Note on Uncertainty

Before we dive into the findings, a word of caution: LinkedIn is inherently unpredictable.

Even our best-performing keywords show massive variance. Take “excited” - it delivers +39% engagement lift on average. But look at the range:

  • Best quartile: 2.4x the author’s typical engagement
  • Worst quartile: 0.6x the author’s typical engagement

That’s a 4x difference (2.4x/0.6x = 4) between a good day and a bad day - with the exact same word.

What does this mean for you?

  1. There are no magic words. If there was a simple A+B=C rulebook, we’d all be following it. These stats are guides, but not rules.
  2. Volume & consistency matter. A single post is a dice roll. But consistent, quality posts stack the odds in your favour.
  3. Variety is good, but crap is always crappy. You should have lots of different post angles and ideas… but bad content is still bad content, and while technically is a variety, is not a variety we recommend.

The tables below show the median lift (what you can typically expect), plus the range (25th to 75th percentile) and % above baseline (how often posts with this keyword beat the author’s average), which gives you an idea of consistency within a given author’s style.

*This is exactly why Drumbeat focuses on helping your team post frequently and consistently. Because it’s actually really hard to do it consistently, and do it well, and do it so it doesn’t sound like AI sludge.

1. “I Got A New Job”

Job announcements absolutely smash it.

The phrase “starting new position” delivers a mega +651% engagement lift. Yep, six hundred and fifty-one percent. That’s mad.

And it’s not just for you alone, because you’re such a beautiful and unique snowflake. No, in fact 88% of job announcement posts beat the author’s typical engagement level.

So obviously you should change jobs every three months, right?

Obviously not. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of job-hopping these days but… you can’t start a new job every week!

But here’s what this actually tells us:

  1. Celebration content wins. People love to celebrate others. It’s genuinely heartwarming, and costs nothing to engage with. There’s no social cost to liking a generic feel-good story. It’s why Disney is popular, but often kind of boring once you’re over about 11 years old.

But more importantly:

  1. When someone joins your company… it’s a hugely powerful opportunity for you on LinkedIn. Their intro post will get 6-7x their normal engagement. So this post NEEDS to be on point. It needs to be on message, it needs to be in their voice, and, when executed well, will start the process of revealing hidden demand.

  2. New hire posts are marketing gold - if you coordinate them properly. Otherwise, it’s just another missed opportunity.

Why New Job Posts Are So Different

We classified all 15,000+ posts using AI, and found something striking about “new job” announcements:

MetricNew Job PostsAll Other Posts
Median normalized engagement4.30x1.00x
% beating author’s baseline88%44%
🎉 Celebrates share13.8%4.2%
Comments share17.5%9.7%

New job posts are such extreme outliers (+330% vs avg) that they skewed our entire data set. So we removed them from the rest of this analysis so it’s actually useful (you’re welcome!)

This is exactly why Drumbeat exists, and why you should get your team on it from their first day on the job. Getting these critical posts out in THEIR voice, on YOUR message, at ANY scale.

2. “Hi team, please share this article” is a TERRIBLE marketing strategy

Here’s what the stats show: the type of content you post matters more than you probably think.

We classified about 16,000 posts into four categories:

  • Regular (29%): Original thoughts, stories, observations
  • Promo (59%): Sharing articles, webinars, events, downloads
  • Hiring (12%): Job postings and recruiting content
  • New Job (4%): Career transition announcements

The Verdict

Category% of PostsLift vs Baseline% Beat Author Baseline
Regular29%+7%52%
Hiring12%-2%43%
Promo59%-7%40%

Promo posts are 59% of all content but underperform by 13% compared to Regular posts.

That’s huge. The majority of what people post on LinkedIn (article shares, webinar promos, event invites) is systemically worse than basically anything else.

And yet – the VAST MAJORITY of what people put out there is thinly veiled promo content.

That’s weird.

Put another way: regular posts beat their author’s baseline 52% of the time. Promo posts only beat baseline 40% of the time.

Let’s think about this critically.

Usually, someone will say, “We have a webinar next week,” or “Hey, here’s an article about us,” or “Please please please can you share this?” And your team will get sent a cut-and-paste job to stick onto their LinkedIns.

A few do, and it’s pretty cringe to see 10 people all post the exact same thing. Most don’t, and so then nothing gets posted. We’re not sure which is worse.

And it makes sense, when you think about it. No one really needs to see your latest whitepaper. No one needs to know about your webinar. Hey, no one really needs to read this report (and if you came across this report from a LinkedIn post – then it’s the exception that proves the rule!)

The problem is: how do you encourage 100 people across your business to think of interesting things to say?

You can’t. Or at least, if you can, you can’t sustain it.

3. Feelings Beat Facts

Here’s a basically obvious statement: emotions outperform logic.

The data is clear. And this is probably common sense, although so many LinkedIn posts are so bland, it sure shows how uncommon a sense it is.

Many post stuff on LinkedIn because they feel obliged to, or because they’re given a copy/paste version from Marketing to put up. Or when they do post, it’s all about them - which maybe helps them get a new job… but won’t be helping your business.

4. Everything The Gurus Told You Is Wrong

Remember when every LinkedIn post ended with “Thoughts? 👇” and every “guru” told you to ask questions to “boost engagement”?

Sure bro, whatever you say…

Overused engagement bait may be actively hurting your reach

Why does engagement bait backfire?

Three reasons:

  1. Audiences have evolved. People have seen “Drop a 🔥 if you agree” ten thousand times. Yawn-fest.

  2. The algorithm has evolved. LinkedIn (like every platform) now deprioritizes obvious engagement farming.

  3. It signals low-value content. If you need to beg for engagement, maybe - and we’re sorry if this hurts your feelings - your content isn’t worth engaging with.

Perhaps it’s counter-intuitive, but posts that don’t ask for comments usually get more comments. Sort of reminds us of our dating lives as teenagers. But that’s for a different report altogether.

The pattern is clear:

  • Celebration emoji (🎉 🏆 🙌) = good
  • Emotion emoji (❤️ 😊 🔥) = good
  • Pointing emoji (👇 👀 ➡️) = bad
  • Thinking emoji (🤔) = bad

But the thing is, the good aren’t always good, and the bad aren’t always bad. When in context, emoji act as amplifiers of your context, or as a visual pattern interrupt. But if they’re contrived… then people can spot that inauthenticity a mile away. And the data backs that up.

7. Punctuation: The… (Hidden) Lever? Full stop.

This one… is surprising? Punctuation choices have a big impact, but not how you’d think.

Key findings:

  • Exclamation marks work. Triple exclamation (!!!) = +25%. Genuine enthusiasm reads as authentic. Until you overdo it, and it’ll stop working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (see?)
  • Ellipsis creates intrigue. The… dramatic… pause (…) = +20%.
  • Question marks hurt. Single ? = -9%. Asking questions is less effective than making statements.
  • Colons underperform. The list-starter (:) = -8%. Maybe we’re all tired of “Here’s what I learned:” posts.

8. Long posts > Short Posts!

Everyone thinks you should keep stuff short and snippy – years of rotting our brains on Instagram has made us believe that shorter is better.

The data, however, reveals a different story:

Engagement Lift by Post Length

-25% -5% 0% +7% +15%
<100 100-300 300-500 500-1K 1000+

300-500 chars19%0%46%
500-1000 chars22%+7%53%
1000+ chars14%+15%57%

Now see, this is not to say always make something long. But, David Ogilvy used to say that “long copy sells”. Why is this? Because if you get someone invested in what you’re saying for a decent amount of time, it shows attention and interest. So – remember – long copy sells.

Sometimes it feels weird and our instinct is to make something short and sweet. But the data doesn’t lie.

And isn’t it interesting that this pattern holds across categories - except for New Job posts, where shorter actually performs better (no one cares or needs to know how much you’d like to thank your distant aunts and uncles, your year 1 teacher, your nextdoor neighbour and most importantly, Ralph in accounts.)

9. Images don’t actually make a huge difference!

Everyone says you’re supposed to include images in LI posts. But actually – the truth is images alone don’t make or break anything.

TypeLiftNotes
No media0%Baseline
At least one image0%No impact
Video-3%Slightly negative

Basically – if an image adds to your post, use it. If it doesn’t, don’t. A picture may say 1000 words, but you can’t always predict what those words are. So if in doubt, focus on what you say.

Also – can we put an end to selfie spam on LinkedIn? Please? Can we all agree to just stop doing that? Cheers.

10. The First 150 Characters Matter (but not how you’re probably thinking)

LinkedIn shows roughly 150 characters before the “see more” link. This is your headline, your hook.

You only get one shot. Vomit on your sweater, mom’s spaghetti, and so on and so forth.

Here’s what tends to work (and what doesn’t) in hooks across our sample:

But again, there’s no one-size-fits-all rule. What matters most is YOUR voice being ON MESSAGE. And then it’s just optimizing how that message is conveyed (Drumbeat will sort that for you, not to worry!)

11. Nothing Is Guaranteed on LinkedIn (and maybe in life, but that’s a different problem)

If you read this report, and don’t apply a bit of nuance to it, then you’ll think you have a A + B = C formula.

Pro tip: that just simply isn’t the case.

Look at this comparison of two high-performing keywords:

KeywordLiftWorst QuartileBest Quartile% Beat Avg
team+16%0.7x2.3x56%
excited+39%0.8x3.4x63%

Even keywords with strong average lift have wide variance. A post with “excited” might get 2.4x your normal engagement… or 0.6x. Same word, wildly different outcomes.

This is why single-post thinking is a trap.

The math only works in your favor when you:

  1. Post consistently - let the averages play out over dozens of posts
  2. Vary your content - don’t rely on one formula
  3. Coordinate across your team - more people posting = more chances for the algorithm to smile on you

This is the core philosophy behind Drumbeat: orchestrating consistent, varied, authentic content across entire teams - because the law of large numbers beats “one viral post” every time.

12. The Sum of the Whole…

Some of the highest-performing phrases aren’t about you at all - they’re about belonging to something bigger.

PhraseLiftRange% Beat Avg
to be part+63%1.0x – 3.1x70%
be part of+55%1.0x – 3.6x70%
proud to be+62%0.8x – 3.8x65%
journey+47%0.8x – 3.5x66%

Why this works: Humans are tribal. We want to belong. When you position yourself as “part of” something - a team, a movement, a community - you invite others into that belonging.

“I did this” is fine. “I’m part of something amazing” is better.

Methodology

How we did this:

  • Sample: Our authors are a representative sample of mid-senior commercial-facing roles (sales, marketing, customer success, leadership) within medium to large B2B enterprises. This isn’t skewed towards influencers or content creators – it reflects how regular professionals actually use LinkedIn.
  • Dataset: 15,999 posts from 556 LinkedIn authors
  • Total engagements analyzed: 2.6 million (2.2M reactions + 266K comments + 108K reposts)
  • Classification: AI-powered categorization (New Job, Hiring, Promo, Regular)
  • Normalization: Per-author median, so engagement is relative to each author’s typical performance (this way, a viral post from a small creator is comparable to one from a large influencer)
  • Minimum sample: 30 posts per keyword for inclusion
  • Deduplication: Overlapping n-grams removed (e.g., if “starting new position” qualifies, we remove “starting new” and “new position” to avoid counting the same pattern multiple times)
